One thing that contributes to the abundance of people drawn to the city is employment. A very large percentage of the population is employed by the State of Oklahoma at Tinker Air Force Base. In addition to the large variety of military and government employment options in the area, this region is also home to one of the largest cattle and livestock markets in the world. On April 19, 1995, Oklahoma City was ground zero for one of the deadliest acts of domestic terrorism in United States history. The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, located in the downtown area of the city, was bombed just a couple of minutes past nine on that Wednesday morning. This event was carefully planned and occurred at a prime time for maximum damage and injuries as the work day had just begun. One hundred and sixty-eight men, women and children lost their lives that tragic morning and over six hundred and fifty others were injured. There was extensive damage to the federal building as well as hundreds of surrounding buildings with an estimated six hundred fifty-two million dollars worth of damage. Thankfully the criminal was seized into custody less than two hours after the event occurred.
